Description
Melanotan II is a cyclic seven-amino-acid analog of alpha-MSH — cyclic meaning the chain is joined into a ring, which makes it more stable than a linear peptide. It is considerably smaller than Melanotan I and, importantly, considerably less selective: it binds multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes rather than one.
There are five melanocortin receptors in the human body and they are not interchangeable. MC1R is on pigment cells. MC3R and MC4R are largely in the brain and are involved in energy balance and, through MC4R, in sexual function. MC2R sits in the adrenal cortex; MC5R in exocrine tissue. Melanotan I was designed to prefer MC1R. Melanotan II binds broadly across the family, which is why its documented effects are not confined to pigment cells — the breadth is a property of the molecule, not a side issue.
